There sure are a LOT of weight management tips across the internet, and after my research it appears finding the facts from trustworthy sources is harder than it seems. Heck, I’m a doctor and had trouble verifying a lot of this stuff, so how is someone without a medical degree supposed to find accurate and safe info? Today I’m taking a look at some popular weight loss tips around the internet to tell you what’s real and and what’s not.

  • Dr. Mike can you please tell me about weight gain? I am struggling with this because whatever I eat i don't feel like gaining weight. Plus i don't like eating sugar and my sugar consumption is only through 2 cups of tea a day.

  • I am losing weight by inventing my own dieting plan. - Replace all drinks by water and tea with a few buttermilk cups instead of normal milk once a few days. - no cookies and chips and candies (just a little bit from time to time) - large breakfast becomes a piece of fruit - a few less potatoes during warm meal - exercise more (5x 1 hours cycling, 1 hour to 2 hours running a week) with a few other exercises like sit ups. - drink water when tummy rumbles Its very effective for me. Projected is around 30 kilo gone in a year time if I were to continue it this whole year. It is a pretty aggressive method where I easily eat less than 1500 kcal. So within 8 days 1 kg if I were to do it the same all days. It is just That I wanna get rid as much as I possibly can. I have been overweight since my birth. With over 10 kg overweight at the moment. Isn’t much but I would love myself to finally enjoy my body during the summer

Found out this section is blessedly lacking dogma against Noom, which is unfortunately not what happened to the comments section of another well-known physician/FIstreamr who was sponsored by Noom this week. Black and white thinking, full on rhetoric, lacking in data. Wonder why similar content creators can attract such a different vibe in their comments section.

  • Worse part about having an unhealthy relationship with weight and having people calling you fat and telling you to loose weight is that you feel like you have to please them and ....if I loose all the weight people will stop pestering me And I know I could loose the weight if I just stop eating and work out too much cause I've done it before and I have to wrestle between forcing myself not to starve myself but also know that people are judging me everyday for my weight and the one thing i could do to fix it i dont want to do to myself again 😩

  • I liked Noom but my biggest criticism is that I had no idea of the education or background of the counselors that they assigned to me. I'm like is this person a registered dietitian or a doctor? Do they have some sort of degree in health? Are they a trainer from a gym or a random person from the internet? Maybe it has changed now but when I was enrolled, it felt odd to try to listen to recommendations of someone that I knew nothing about.

  • You had me at "turn your house into a rave while you eat" lol to funny. Honestly I drink water while i eat and I get full faster. Also I recently changed my diet to eating no processed foods, and I dropped 3 pounds in the first week, and my bloating went away. I'm 24 years old and at the beginning of January I was 175 pounds, and now i'm 167, it really is all about making better food choices, and i don't waste a lot of money on foods I do not need anymore. I also just started walking about 30 minutes everyday, slowly building up to better excersize routine.

  • Gotta agree with the meal prep Though I'm working on adding more healthy options to this as some meals don't work with this to the degree I mostly need (I have chronic pain and so I try to meal prep so it's mostly just heating it up) Freezer prep also helps because then I only have to prep once a month for dinners, although some items my SO and I enjoy we can't freeze because it ruins thre dish (alfredo is gross if it's not freshly made guys) I've even meal prepped holiday dinners and we're working on easing into making them healthier as we go, so far we mix the mashed potatoes with cooked and blended cauliflower, it still mostly tastes of potatoes with just a hint of cauliflower, but if you season them you can't tell We're going to try swapping the sugar for the sweet potato casserole next, if it works out we'll try it with the dry rub for the Turkey on Thanksgiving too I'm cutting sugar due to inflammation, but it's a slow process so as to not go back

  • I have recently been researching Intermittent Fasting and I gotta say, I'm a big fan. Dr Jason Fung really opened my eyes and mind. And what is ideally anyone's goal before treatment is needed???? PREVENTION my friend!!! And DoctorMike don’t you know it!! 👌 Obviously fasting isn't for everyone but with the information I have at this time I feel like there is a lot that can be said for this type of lifestyle. And so far, it's been working for me too. YAY!

  • You should do beachbody, before I started Noom I tried it and tried following the 21 fix meal plan and the portion fix one too along with the exercising. It’s far too much (even though many are short workouts) for beginners trying to lose weight and get in shape

  • I know that each diet is different for each person. But I hate when people try to make others do intermittent fasting. I did it and gained weight. It was awful. If it works for you, good. I'm glad. But don't shove it down people's throat, thinking if you don't eat you'll loose weight.

  • @Chewing throroughly I do agree with chewing thoroughly BUT I have a problem with the idea of the poster. Like diet or not FINISH what you put on your plate. so what will you do of you are full earlier? Throw away your food? Put less food on your plate in the first place or skip a meal. skipping meals is healthier and less wasteful

  • I found my own trick to weight loss. Found out it was all circled around salt. Any and all food cravings have been hell bent on salt. So I kicked it off by not eating any foods that contain salt. The cravings took 7 days to die off. Yes I know we need salt in out bodies. But if any salt goes in my body it will morten salt that contains idodine in it. Other minor salt intake is like a 3 muskateers bar once a day. Then 3 times a week I eat a t bone steak with little or no seasoning. first week is ZERO SALT AT ALL except on the friday evening then you can break it. Saturday and sunday try to avoid any and all salts if you can a tiny bit is ok. On week 2 I already felt so much better. I am now on my week 3 and already see the pounds leaving my body since the salt stop so have most of the cravings.

  • Unfortunately I don’t really have the option to excercise at the moment. It’s January 2021 and we are in lockdown here in England. It’s also absolutely freezing outside with snow on the ground. We can only go outside once a day close to home. I would be at the gym which is my preferred choice of workout. So I’m going at weight loss through diet alone. Wish me luck.

  • That “ruin your food with milk or salt” one was like wtf. Why not eat your delicious leftovers. I know a guy who live out in the woods, he smokes his steak or chicken for the week and heats leftovers up on the flat top😋 o my god is it delish. I’d work at his house on the weekends and he’d save some leftover sirloin or tri-tip or chicken from a few days ago and we’d make street tacos that were to die for. Don’t waste food my dudes, there’s hungry people in LA living in tents.

  • In terms of protein powder, I think it's beneficial when one is on the go and is a healthy alternative to use as in ingredient in desserts (ie. every night I make microwave protein mug cake: ingredients: vegan protein powder, monk fruit powder, tbsp peanut butter, a piece of dark chocolate, cinnamon) A nutrient-dense alternative that's satiating and tastes like YUM. Otherwise, agreed whole food overall is the way to go!

  • I have two questions on this topic 1 can you eat too much fish? As I usually eats 5 to 6 portions of fish a week usually in the form of tinned Mackrell, sardines and fresh salmon 2 I used to have a problem with drinking far too many sugary drinks like energy drinks and soda so I've made the switch to sugar free version of these products so my question is are they actually better or is it just a con?   • HAPPY NEW YEAR MIKE!!! my ex girlfriend cheated on me 4 months ago... I was bored as hell and felt soo bad about myself, but this corona time helps me to work on myself.   • The advice at the beginning that said to try and distract yourself from eating is actually the opposite of what you do. There are studies that show if you do something like watching tv while eating, you will eat more because you're not being mindful about what you're doing. When people focus on their eating and how their body feels, they will eat less.

  • I know I’m practically commenting on every video but that’s because I always want to know or learn something to questions that arise during the videos; (still not sorry for it! 🤣 it’s a running gag from my tweets to Dr Mike.) ANYWAY.. Bouncing off the “mirror trick” (which I think is bogus), that brought up the thought about this trick someone uses at work: Someone hung up a mirror at a register and when a customer got angry, they’d see themselves in the mirror and because they were happy with seeing themselves like that, it’d diffuse or calm down their tone of anger.     • Salmon related question: Apparently I heard (I may have misheard it) that The Rock Dwayne Johnson eats 6 meals a day and 3-4 of them are salmon. Since salmon can contain Mercury, could this type of diet lead to Mercury poisoning?

  • I have a horrible eating disorder I learned from my mother and father--and I'm really, REALLY trying hard to make sure my daughter doesn't learn it. She's two and she can be a picky eater, but I try so hard to make sure she has healthy options available all the time. My problem growing up was that I was a picky eater [mostly due to textures] and my parents let me frigging eat horrible garbage like sugar cereals, chocolate, gummies, and whatever I would actually eat without trying to help me eat something healthy. If I didn't eat what they ate, I just had to find my own options...as a really little kid. Like 4 or 5. Didn't eat veggies until I was almost a teen. A big motivator for me to eat better is the fact that my daughter is always watching. She's only 2, but she's really perceptive and she watches all the time.

  • Also I was so excited about Noom, until I realized they promoted diet based restrictive eating .. 1200 calorie options. I have being fighting disordered eating for 22 years and I can tell you Noom is a diet plan disguised as something else. I have to say that after so long I can say it’s not losing weight but accepting all of yourself that is the answer. You will always gain the weight back .

  • I used to be anorexic when I was about 14-15. Now I’m considerably overweight. Trying to lose this weight the healthy way and not slip back to those habits of restricting is honestly really difficult. I don’t really know what I’m getting at with this comment but to anyone who’s trying to lose weight, keep an eye on yourself. Make sure you don’t obsess over your weight.

  • I tried Noom once, and I didn't really get anything useful out of it. It ended up just being a money sink that didn't offer much by way of help getting and keeping on track. I have had better luck just joining a kickboxing gym and cutting out breads and other high carb things...and no red meats, plenty of water and some protein shakes before a workout. It's not for everyone, and everyone should check with a doctor before big changes (I did and continue to), but it's been working for me so far.

  • Thanks for all the tips :) I hovered around 170ish since I was around 16 or 17 up until I was 24. Then I got put on Zyprexa 15MG and I swear I kept the same diet and everything and I ended up gaining 60-70 pounds in around 9-10 months and kept gaining weight but slower when I just started barely eating. I was recently taken off it and put on something else but could medication play a huge role? It wasn't like I was lazy and snacked and ate unhealthy all the time either. I have yet to check my weight since I got taken off it around a month and a half ago and last time I checked I was around 245 I believe.

  • I'm teaching myself intuitive eating. I've also started eating a ~lot~ more fruits and vegetables. Okay, I was... currently I'm having some stomach troubles (unrelated, I think I might have a viral stomach thing), but I'm still trying to eat mild vegetables! I don't know if it's helped with losing weight, but I feel really good about it mentally. XD

I was diagnosed with Pneumonia when I was in high school, and my White blood cells count started to increase while my Red blood cells are decreasing. I don't know if that's the reason why it's so hard for me to gain weight. Hope you can have that video too, an introduction to Pneumonia 'cause it's one of the symptoms of the Covid-19.
