Sunscreen, swimsuits, football head injuries (concussions/CTE), dogs and babies… the doctors on Reddit have strong takes on all of these things and so much more. I decided to look at a thread about practices medical professionals have started based upon things they’ve learned from their patients. Some of the advice is good, such as having an up-to-date will and the benefits of quitting smoking. Other things, such as making sure you pee before you get inside ANY car… are a little too much for me. At the end I also share 3 ways I’ve changed my life based on my interactions with patients, including thoughts on skin cancer and coffee and alcohol consumption. Let me know down below if you think any of these will change the way you go about your daily life!

"More then 5 sunburns" have you ever been to Australia. You can't go outside in winter for 2 seconds without burning
Why'd you have to bring Dan into this?
I am crying and laughing when he was talking about to always go pee before getting in a car.
just me terrified cause i’ve had a lot of sunburns.
8:28 I am currently doing a bachelors degree in biochemistry and with the stress of that and having to stay home because of the pandemic, I have become very sedentary and that kinda worries me. Studying for hours and then not even being able to excersise well is not a good combination
Man, I get more than 5 sunburns a year from how easily I burn!
For the dog and infant situation, even if you think your dog is the best dog and will be gentle you don’t know if a infant would. I knew this baby who would love to try to poke my dog near the eye or pinch her. Once when she was a puppy, she had extra skin, he tried pulling the skin so hard. Now we were near her so we got him away and always covered her face so he wouldn’t poke her. But imagine if we left them unattended. The amount of pain that she had I’m pretty sure she would bite. She is a really good dog. She wouldn’t bite him when he first started pinching her, but you never know. Now even if the child is the one that hurts the dog and the dog is just trying to protect themselves the dog is going to be taken away.
Doctor Mike talking about skin cancer: Me, a Brazilian who faces everyday 95 fahrenheit of sun at least: That's not good I guess...
I love how when telling us to stop smoking Dr. Mike fails to mention that you will live longer.
"Over 5 sunburns-" Me: An Irish/German woman. ". . . Dude. . ."
Can’t unhear the fact about peeing before I get into a car.
"God I hope bear doesn't do me in in my sleep" I laughed way too hard at that omg
I felt really bad when he said stop smoking because I was smoking while he said that
i stopped smoking half a year ago, no need for nicotine gum or anything.. just stopped.. best decision ever!!
Also, after the video, i had to google how to clean your BB properly, so thanks for that, i'll start doing that.
Man, i hate myself for being able to ignore urination calls for +8 hours, i really don't know why, i just forget about it.
*_ill never get in a car without peeing again_*
I once had an ER looking at my knee. He was huge, completely ripped, and had a weird "hood dudebro turned Doctor" vibe. You had better believe I listened when he explained the RICE protocol that he wanted me to follow.
When I was a kid I think I fell of a bike going down a hill I was going 20mph it hurt so bad
Hi, I wanted to ask is it normal that sometimes my eye starts twitching randomly and I cant really control it but I can end it by rubbing my eye or blinking fastly and what could it be causing that
8:31 am I the only one concerned about pop out (I think veins?) on his neck
The sunburn thing freaks me out. I can go out for 10 minutes and My cheeks and nose are burning
Do you have any tips for breaking out of a sedentary lifestyle? I work 12-14 hour shifts driving a forklift. After work I don't usually have the energy to do much, even though i just spent so much of my day sitting. I'm only 25 and I am FALLING APART. My back is in constant pain, my knees hurt, my hands/wrists are in so much discomfort I actually struggle gripping things sometimes (even my cell phone). My mental health is also declining (depression and irritability). The longer this goes on the more I realize I need to do something to get better, but it also become more and more difficult to actually do something...
Asking hivemind. I use Farm fresh you. Is Thrive Market better?
Once my niece was at my house and my sister needed to go to the toilet I was in the other room cooking. She went up because she was desperate and I went to go in and my dog and niece were only for about only 1 minute at the absolute most. When I went in my dog was on top of her playing but since she was only 11 months old at the time he was being way to ruff. I immediately rush to her and shouted at my dog. My dog is actually very sensitive when hes extremely well behaved and if he ever gets told of or has done wrong he goes and sits in the corner and covers his face. My niece was checked and she was completely fine and once it synced in I felt so guilty for shouting at him. He was intentionally trying to cause her harm he was just trying me nice and play with her. Dogs don’t realise that they need to be gentle with baby’s they can be naturally really heavy handed. Although now my dog is always afraid that he will hurt my niece and is always super gentle around her.
The ad I got on this video was “ which chakra is block” XD
The legal tadpole cytopathologically bounce because connection demographically influence apropos a puzzling tachometer. spiky, hypnotic john
Dr Mike: don’t just sit there move Me and my ADHD a** be like: 🏃🏻♂️ alright time to kick ur legs for no good reason
Soccer is also terrible for brain injuries if I remember correctly. They have high rates of concussion due to headers/ physical contact.
You keep talking up the benefits of quiting smoking, shoot, im about to start just so i can stop
I don’t smoke but my family always have. My mother smoked even when she was pregnant with me and later when I grew up and asked her if she could smoke outside because I think it is very bad for me she used this to as a kind of exuse. Like saying: well I smoked when i was pregnant with you so it won’t change anything if I go out now. At the moment I live with my grandma and she also refuses to go out to the balcony or even sit next to an open window when she is smoking. Both her and my mother smoke incredible much. I also have two 10 year old siblings. Is there anything I could do to somehow minimize the harm of second and third hand smoke?
I have more than 20 moles just on my arms. And I’ve definitely have had more than 5 sunburns in my life. But I’ve had a dermatologist look at my moles and they said I was fine. I’m still young so maybe I’m ok?
Funny story about dogs being around A toddler/infant My brother grew up around dogs there were these two dogs there was a Bubba who is an English mastiff then there’s Cesar who I forgot the breed of Those dogs took care of my brother they went to my mom whenever he needs a diaper change They looked after him And they protected him They also tried to put his pacifier back in his mouth lol
Petition to make schools care about our mental health

8:29 Doctors mike: Go for walks, don’t always lay down or sit Me during quarantine: 👁👅👁✌🏻
Hey Dr.Mike do people ask for your opinion on covid my mother works as a nurse and she gets a lot of questions
8:28 Each of my online classes are an hour long with no breaks and we have to have our camera on. Guess that explains some things
Dr. Mike: movement solves a lot of health problems including mental health. Me: exercising so I'm in a good enough mood to be depressed today
Me counting the moles in my body: 😨
Oh, this is great. Really top advice in an awesome human package. Love and respect to you Dr Mike 🤗
but what if I want to smoke so I can die faster
“ *I NEED TO PEE RIGHT NOW !* “
Alright....I'll stop for Dan.
Just a quick thought, only slightly related. I've seen a lot of people (from both supporters and nonsupporters) saying that transgender people have high suicide rates even after going through some form of transition, and I'm not really sure where that came from? Life is so complicated for every individual, what foods work for them, what family situations do they have, family med history, a million different factors that could contribute to the number being potentially higher in that group of people. It could be from people still unhappy with who they are, it could be from family situations, it could be financial, literally ANYTHING. I just don't see how people can blindly chock a statistic (that I personally have no idea where it came from) to just either the treatment of trans people in general from nonsupporters, OR regret in transitioning. Shouldn't each case be addressed on an individual bases, instead of lumping every individual together and trying to blame whatever the number is on what suits our agenda? Shouldn't we be trying to take preventative action against mental illness, and focusing on what we can do for the individual? Not blindly blaming rates of a group of people on one thing or the other. Idk I'm just tired of people being lumped into groups. I think if we tried to focus more on the individuals, we could have more empathy, and see them more as a fellow human, instead of someone different.
also dogs tend to be protective over babies, toddlers, and kids because they are the youngest member of their “pack” but that doesnt mean they wont snap because if they dont like something they dont usually care who it is
“is this something i want you to think about? no” my anxiety: i’ll pass on that offer
Coffee=parental functionality.
Dogs and babies just don't have enough self-control between theme. We generally have one person in charge of the baby and one in charge of the dog when they interact.
DOC MIKE EATS SOY EVERYDAY THATS WHY HIS VOICE IS SO BETA!! HE PARTYS IN MIAMI WHILE TELLING US WE MUST STAY HOME! LET HIM KNOW!!
Wait so doctors are ok with me using a trampoline? My sister said it would kill me lol
Dont have a sedentary lifestyle, BUT watch all my videos. LOL I hear ya Dr Mike, just teasing.
Should react to rugby injuries
I have 1 mole (and a few birthmarks, don't know if it's the same but I only have 8) don't indoor tan, and have only twice been sunburned neither time so badly that it was visible, I just got a little discomfort on the top of my right cheek. Yet I've never worn sunscreen.
The beautiful mercury culturally label because ocelot apparently suit times a agonizing gate. slow, sore fight
anytime someone says that ill get a sunburn i just tell them "I'm a brunette with the foundation colour porcelain and I barely tan by staying in the sun all day in the Canadian prairies. I doubt I'm gonna get a sunburn" and yes I am the only one in my family that doesn't tan nor burn
i thought dan was onamo for a sec ngl
Petition for Dr Mike to play BitLife. Hehe he is gonna be screaming
As a non american, I have no idea what goop is. Internet searches are confusing. Would anyone be willing to explain?
WHAT HAPPENED TO MY BEEWOOP!!!!?!?!!?!
The dog / babies thing is common sense ... well it should be lol
"Stop smoking right now." Me, always seeing doctors smoking outside of hospitals: 👁👄👁 Also like shouldn't they be the ones NOT smoking? Like they should know better than that.
Smoking is a quick way for a doctor to convince patients he's not the brightest bulb in the chandelier. As late as 1982 (which ought to be modern times) I went to the Yale Health Service with a chronic cough. The doctor had a cigarette burning in an ashtray on his desk while he checked me! Cause of cough found 3 years later: Asthma, primary trigger is cigarette smoke. I really thrive on smoke-free air.
7:24 - 7:25
I think I have more than 30 moles on my body and I’m only 13...
Dont be scared, be aware!
For a second I got mixed up with moles and freckles 🥴
Everyone in the comments: i GeT sUnBuRnEd EaSiLy Me: I'm from South Asia, I have pretty dark skin, I can't get sunburned! Yay!
He should have finished reading the comment about using mind-altering substances. The full statement was to only use them for a specific purpose because they stop working if used constantly, which is true. The doctor wasn't saying you need a _meaningful_ reason to drink coffee, only that you should save it for when you're really tired and not just as a daily routine.
I wish I wasn't living such a sedentary lifestyle, but with all my college classes online I'm at my desk 16-20 hours a day depending on the week 😓 If I'm not at my desk, I'm asleep.
I agree with what you said about dogs and babies because you included the word "unattended". People need to monitor the interactions but as long as you're a good dog owner and can tell when your dog is stressed, a dog can be around a baby.
lol, my doctor said he hasn't done my surgery in over 10 years.
I really wish I can go to see DR. MIKE...I would be so comfortable telling him the most embarrassing and uncomfortable things I'm scared to share with ANY other doctor I ever met in my life. I will live in hope...you never know. What a great personality and professional attitude he has. All the best to him and his family
Mike : We have to take your goop samples for tests. Patient : goop?? Mike : goop is poop 😂😂😂
My important life rule is never end a conversation angry. You do not want your last words or last chat with a loved one to be something you regret. I always end my chats with family and other loved ones with I love you. My mother died very suddenly when I was 7 and it made me realize you could be healthy and still die tomorrow. So never leave after an argument or say thing like I hate you because you never know. Also live your life like it could be your last day. Do things you love and not worry about what you can't control.
I feel like if you crash your car, the paramedics wouldn't blame you for pissing your pants.
dr mike: have you had >5 sunburns in your life? me, an australian: is that a high number?
Dr Mike- dogs don't realize how gentle you must be with toddlers My toddlers- running into walls, body slamming each other, jumping off beds... you know, doing all the not gentle things
1:21 Thrive Market is affordable Chicken price: $119.99 o.o
I love you💗
I don't smoke. But I'd certainly stop for Dan. Edit: grammar
Could you do a video on quitting smoking and cessation programs? I work in LTC and an alarming amount of us smoke, but most of us feel like it’s harder to quit and find other ways to cope with the stress than it is to deal with the complications of smoking. I know that’s wrong, but that’s how we feel.
I'll be real, I'm really glad that oftentimes nowadays, SPF50+ is the standard and isn't more expensive than 30+. I also live in a country where the sun is a deadly laser so that might have something to do with it, though.
As a dog owner, thank you for what you said about dogs and children. My own dog is a pitbull, and people go to the extreme of thinking they're devil dogs that want to murder (not true, most of them are very sweet and friendly, OR they overreact against that by acting like there can never be any danger and there's no need for precautions. At the end of the day, most of them are good dogs, loving dogs...but still dogs. And one should always exercise common sense caution where children are involved, there's just no reason not to.
About the psych/addiction medicine advice; I don't think this advice is meant per se for someone who's mentally healthy, because they wouldn't need to be so strict. However, it is actually really good advice for someone who's struggling!
Mike: Don't become sedentary Me: Too late
So that is the reason that football players are always so angry, even when they win.
Like I tell everybody, I can drink a full cup of coffee and immediately go to bed. Coffee and caffeine in general have little to no effect on me. But I don't drink coffee for the caffeine; I drink it simply because I like it and it tastes good. That said, I also drink water and have been trying to do better about getting some exercise in. So far, I'm doing a pretty good job of sticking to it!
My dad got a shot once and he asked have you done this before and he said no (it was a joke)
I stopped becoming sedentary by losing my job and getting a job shelf stacking. Shock to the system to be so active and I'm basically being paid to exercise
i dont smoke but i might consider drinking (when i get to the legal age here think its 18)
I'm actually mildly allergic to the sun( I break out in hives if I get more than a couple hours of direct sunlight and am extra susceptible to sun poisoning), so when I go to like the lake or something I have to wear pants and at the minimum a t shirt, if I'm gonna be out for hours I have to wear long sleeves and I always have a hat on. Plus side is im basically never gonna be in the sun too much.
This senior in my school almost got paralyzed from football and then after he graduated he died in a car crash he has a twin I feel so bad for him
Standing and sitting both don't work... My back hurts after sitting too long and standing up after the sitting session makes my vision fully black for a minute, my hearing shallow, my legs weak, and sometimes passing out because I have Pots. But because I have Pots, when I tried a standing desk, where I also moved around the room more, within half an hour my vision wouldn't focus, I felt nausea + lightheaded and I couldn't think at all and that's only after about half an hour, even after I sat down for a break, I couldn't focus my vision and felt shaky and tired for 10 minutes. Is there really any solution?
Very true, an infant, or toddler should never be left alone with a dog. Not just for the kid's safety either, little ones can easily injure an animal. Of course, injuring the dog is likely to get a baby bitten. I don't care how gentle your dog is, if it's self defense, you can't expect an animal not to attack.
One thing I’d wish that people would know is that too many baths, particularly with bath bombs or other scented substances, can cause ph issues in your vagina. I’m serious, have it every once in a while, but not every day.
Time to get my molds removed. I have over 5..
And work on kicking the smoking habit.
Mike: don’t become sedentary. Me: *having been in bed for the last 17 hours* “you can’t tell me what to do, you’re not my real dad.”
I always pee before getting into a car because nobody wins when you play chicken with your bladder.
"Never become sedentary" me: *serioussly considering to start a twitch chanel that will implicate alot of sitting down during a long period of time* also me: "well- I'll be doing art so i /might/ not be seated *all* the time.....
3:57 well now I am
