Sunscreen, swimsuits, football head injuries (concussions/CTE), dogs and babies… the doctors on Reddit have strong takes on all of these things and so much more. I decided to look at a thread about practices medical professionals have started based upon things they’ve learned from their patients. Some of the advice is good, such as having an up-to-date will and the benefits of quitting smoking. Other things, such as making sure you pee before you get inside ANY car… are a little too much for me. At the end I also share 3 ways I’ve changed my life based on my interactions with patients, including thoughts on skin cancer and coffee and alcohol consumption. Let me know down below if you think any of these will change the way you go about your daily life!
Check out the rest of the thread here: www.reddit.com/r/medicine/comments/gkv1x8/as_an_orthopedic_surgeon_i_will_never_ride_a/?
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

  • when sunburn was mentioned, does it means the reddish, hurts a lot sunburn? or dies it includes your skin getting darker with no irritation or pain whatsoever? i am often confused with this, since people often said they are sunburnt, but having only their skin get darker and their face doesnt hurt....but then there are ppl who counter-attacked them and said "thats not a sunburn" so i would really like if anyone care to explain what is the real sunburnt condition that may lead to a high probability of skin cancer....sorry it sounds stupid.

  • On the subject of Dr's level of experience with my illness is so dang hard when you have a less common disease like Behcets Disease. I have even had a nurse try and say that it didn't exist *till she looked it up and the Dr corrected her, I gave her the benefit of doubt since she was new* or argue with me on the pronunciation of that disease *like what?*. Most Dr's when they read Behcets they look at me and say something along the lines of "I haven't seen this since med school" or "I've only seen this once my entire career" or "I have only had one other patient with this condition". Its a constant learning experience for both myself and the Doctor. Its also an ever changing disease and incredibly hard to treat since as he has put it this disease can be different in each geographic region, or whether your male or female can change how it affects you, enviromental factors. Alot can be a factor in how it acts. Then there is the fact they still dont understand what triggers it, where it came from entirely or all of its symptoms. They know a lot, but there is an equal amount of what they dont know that is the scary part. I have a deadly form of this disease and its incredibly painful. We are just managing it right now the best we can since there is no cure. I trust in my Doctor because he has been honest with me right upfront. He was also the only one I could find that wasn't either across the state or that would take my insurance that even knew what the disease is and bonus he specializes in it *granted it was at the bottom of the list of things he specialized in*. Its been nice to have a doctor that can talk to me. After not being diagnosed for the first 19 yrs of my life and suffering then after being diagnosed and not being able to find a doctor who could help me or even wanted to try because its not an easy disease to treat or they just didnt know what to do, it was beginning to get frustrating. on top of all that I was recently diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis. I'm sure there are alot of people in these comments section in the same boat as me. It sucks and it is even more sh*tty to have it on top of behcets. I honestly hate living like this somedays and there for awhile I really was close to giving up because the pain is just so intense somedays. However I'm finding light in my life again and doing my best to fight through the rough days. I hope everyone else out there who is suffering can start to feel or find some sort of light in there lives. Find something that makes you want to keep going.

  • I think you may have misinterpreted the "only use mind altering substances with a purpose" one. I'm pretty sure what they mean is something like, I'm goin to have wine with my dinner, to help relax or unwind or as a reward for having a good day, it can be very simple purposes, just avoiding it becoming an unconscious habit, which can then grow unnoticed.

  • I started smoking when I was 12 and made the switch to vaping when I was 17 (and I’ve splurged with cigarettes every once in a while). I’ve been vaping for over 3 years now, and when I tried to use the patch I was also vaping. It’s hard to stop, I keep making the excuse that I’ll stop vaping when I want a baby, hopefully I follow through. If you have started smoking it’s a friggin struggle. If you haven’t smoked plz don’t do it cause it’s a b!*ch and a half to stop.

Thankfully he did not need stitches and he only has a tiny scar in the outside corner of his nostril. He had been playing with the dog all day long and the dog had never shown any aggression towards him whatsoever. It literally came out of nowhere. So, I can definitely attest to keeping littles away from dogs, or at the very least being extremely cautious.

  • Dr. Mike, can you respond to anti-vaccine videos by FIstreamr Paul Thomas MD. He’s a pediatrician who I tuned into to learn more about common childhood ailments and was greatly disappointed by his approach to vaccines. He’s “vaccine friendly” meaning friendly to delaying or skipping, and has written a book about his vaccine views. You’ve made some amazing vaccine videos and everyone should be primed to receive the COVID-19 vaccine next year. He’s said kids in schools shouldn’t have to wear masks and that masks don’t do much anyway. It’s doctors like him who worry me.

It felt far more imminent than it ever had before and that was a tough one, but we already knew the normal stuff like organ donation, life support, funeral types, it was the specific things covid related we hadn't considered
