We’re all working from home on our computers during the day and checking our phones constantly. That surely must be doing something to our vision, right? Let’s break down the truth behind all-things blue light, such as digital eye strain, the 20/20/20 rule, and macular degeneration.

  • Ahhhh, so that's why when I am looking at my phone screen for 5 hrs straight at night, my right eye's middle part can't see(?) You know when u look at the sun and then close ur eyes and they is a greyish thing? And when I fall asleep and wake up! It's fine! And this also explains why my teacher said to never look at a setting sun for more than two minutes! Didn't know the sun rays had blue light! Thank u for teaching me Doctor Mike! Btw, when I stare at something for too long, my eyes turn cross eyed. I used to have it so often when I was young that I had to wear glasses. Now, I wear glasses becuz of my weak eyesight for staring at the phone too much everyday lol😂😅

  • What if I always do the opposite? All my devices are in night shift all day while my room is dark 24/7. Would that explain why I can see really well at night and see different shades(?) of black and why my eyes now get like disturbed by light? Btw, I do that because I’ve never liked light or the sun or heat...and my city is so bright and so hot, so for the last 4 years I’ve been keeping my room dark (a little bit of sun rays still get inside) and cold, I still had go out but with the current quarantine I’ve been in my room for half a year.

  • Not sure what your point was comparing LEDs to incandescent bulbs... LEDs come in warm colours too so not really a trade off between your health and the environment.

  • If I'm completely honest I don't think blue light is the only thing that is concerning about using electronics at night before bed. for me I always have my blue light off but I still have a hard time putting my phone down at night, but I think that the blue light isn't what's causing me to stay awake, it's the use of my brain. Watching FIstream and tik tok and scrolling through Facebook or any social media, all of that is requiring me to have a lot of thought which in turn keeps me awake. My mom likes to read before she goes to sleep but she only reads books that she's read before to go to sleep, the reason being is if she picks up a new book that she's interested in and is invested in it's going to keep her awake because she doesn't know what happens next and the suspense can keep her awake.

  • Dr. Mike, can you respond to anti-vaccine videos by FIstreamr Paul Thomas MD. He’s a pediatrician who I tuned into to learn more about common childhood ailments and was greatly disappointed by his approach to vaccines. He’s “vaccine friendly” meaning friendly to delaying or skipping, and has written a book about his vaccine views. You’ve made some amazing vaccine videos and everyone should be primed to receive the COVID-19 vaccine next year. He’s said kids in schools shouldn’t have to wear masks and that masks don’t do much anyway. It’s doctors like him who worry me.

  • Dr Mike - speaking of cell phones, is it a bad idea to sleep with your phone near you body or head? Such as effecting memory or sleeping problems or other health issues from radiation. I ask because I’ve just noticed if anyone (myself included) has cell phones under their pillows or near their face while falling asleep we sleep worse than if it’s away. I’m taking into account that blue light and FOMO are causes but can cell phone projected radiation cause this as well? I like to educate myself of bettering my interaction with electronics and focus (and overall health in learning to NOT be on my phone for everything, as well as TVs and such) and I’d appreciate your thoughts on it.   • Light pollution is such an easy type of pollution to fix. Using lights of 3000K temperature or lower and those of more modest brightnesses and all of it pointed where only it's needed. Not only you make it safer at night by not glaring a lot and improving the quality of sleep and also preventing the death of billions of migrating birds that die by exhaustion due to being driven off path and into windows. And the lovely night sky is within the reach of city dwellers from the comfort of home.

  • question: been sleeping every night with a virtual reality headset on for the past year... personally i find i fall asleep faster with it on. the head strap is on loosely and the display is dimmed usually an hour or two before i try to sleep. the display also turns off after 30 minutes... many people have been telling me that wearing a screen strapped to my face while i sleep is extremely unhealthy. just curious on what a doctor thinks about it, should i stop? (p.s i have no issues with eye strain, dry eyes or head aches and i'm 25)

  • You forgot to mention that many devices have a 'night light' feature where you reduce the amount of blue light and turn it more into the red light zone. (Chronic sleep issues - had to learn this to get my sleep patterns optimal to help counter other sleep issues created from Fibromyalgia)

  • I accidentally looked at the sun/moon eclipse once when I was younger, now I lost a very small part of Central vision in my left eye, not that big deal, It's very annoying only If I try to read small font with closed right eye, and the damaged part of my vision is not black, it's like I messed up with a Photoshop tool in a particular point, if staring a grid in the distance with only that eye I will see the iron bars kind of distorted, the eye doctor said there's nothing to do about that

  • I work in front of a computer all day. It was recommended that I get glasses with the blue light filter when I had my eyes chkd. So I did, one unexpected side effect.....90% of my migraines WENT AWAY. Never even considered the computer as a trigger. So I love them.
