Would You Trust A Doctor Dressed Like This?

A new study from the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery came out recently and let’s just say… it wasn’t received well. The study aimed to identify “clearly unprofessional content” shared on social media by young vascular surgeons, such as HIPAA violations and criminal activity. Unfortunately, the study’s 3 male investigators also looked for “potentially unprofessional content” which included doctors posting photos holding alcoholic beverages and “provocative posing in bikinis/swimwear”. I was outraged by the gender bias in this study holding female doctors to a double standard, essentially saying if you’re a doctor or a woman in medicine you don’t get to enjoy legal activities such as having a glass of wine or taking a photo at the beach. I wasn’t alone, as the medical community on twitter came together with the hashtag #medbikini to denounce this study, and just the other day it was actually retracted by the journal. While that’s definitely a win, we need to continue to empower our medical professionals to live normal lives without fear of being authentic on social media, as it’s better for our mental health and truly helps us connect better with our patients.
Read the retracted study for yourself here: www.jvascsurg.org/action/showPdf?pii=S0741-5214%2819%2932587-X

  • I TOTALLY AGREE!! I know it's hard to believe but doctors are human too! They have ups and downs just like everyone on this planet but to say they can't post on social media or wear whatever they want to on their personal time is asinine!!! I'm so tired of these nameless faces judging people that they've never met or understand. People should live their own lives and keep negative comments to themselves. Pleeeeeezzzzzz!

  • Women wearing bathing suits to the BEACH???!! Or the pool???? What next! Do these brazen hussies have no shame??? Wow, is it the year 1915 up in here? And it's totally ridiculous to ban a person in pretty much any profession from talking about politics on their own accounts because guess what? Politics have everything to do with our every day lives and jobs, that's interwoven into the fabric of our society and we all play a part, these issues aren't something that exist in a separate bubble that we can pretend have nothing to do with us. I've seen people in a vast array of professions have their social media accounts checked up on and questioned because they talked about things like social justice on twitter/facebook. Nobody has any right to try to control what people do outside of work on their own time. Human beings have every right to opinions about issues that involve all of us, whether we want to acknowledge it or not. People SHOULD be speaking out if something is wrong or unjust.

  • It is so sad to see how far we haven’t come. It sadly is not just medicine, many in persevered by some members of society as male jobs, suffer too. Back in my twenties, 1st proper ‘researcher science job’ my degree had afforded me, i mentioned to my boss i was thinking of applying for one of the phd positions within the research centre we both worked for. It would mean for 3 years he would have my salary paid for by the grant instead of his budget. Win win. He looked at me dumbfounded. You’ll never get a phd looking like that, waving in my direction. i was wearing (like everyone) jeans & a tshirt when i looked at my clothes then back upto him confused he said ‘no i mean you’. He waved his hand towards my breasts & then did the hour glass shape then pointed to my face & told me i was too pretty & too ‘hour glass shape’ done again. He said i wouldn’t be taken seriously. i talked with my new work colleagues, some of whom were on the phd system, and they all said he probably did have a point. These comments can’t always be easily laughed off or overcome. The anorexia of my teenage years, (brought on by the attention i had gotten when i was too young to cope) & which had meant many months in hospital, came back with vengeance. After i crawled myself outta that hole again i never did the phd. But it is ok, txs to my anorexia they told me i had insanely low chance of having my own child. She is 15 next month. Phd or her? i am happy how my life turned out. To her the idea that someone can be judged by their appearance, sex, colour, sexual orientation just makes no sense. She first asked me to explain racism at about 8. She sat there saying no i dont get it. I tried to explain it again & again (i was getting tbh a wee bit frustrated) then i realised she wasnt saying she didn’t understand my explanation she was saying it sounded impossible that people would judge other people like that. i was first in my family to go to university, but i am more proud of myself that thanks to my input (and others ofc) my daughter thinks all the ‘isms’ are illogical & ridiculous, i am bit proud of her too, but you know its mainly me lol. Its the only way this is going to change educating the young & it is not just the schools job its ours too. Sorry wrote an essay but just in case one person reads this & says sod it i wanna be a Dr, a scientist, an engineer researcher even material scientists:-P its your brain that counts not your bra size. Sorry again.

  • I went to the doctor with my bf we found on Zocdoc. She wore high heels, skin tight dress with sunglasses. While we were in the waiting room we saw her and asked each other do u think she’s the doctor I hope she takes off her sunglasses at least to look at your rashes. When we went in maybe u guys can guess it already she didn’t take off her glasses to look at my bfs rashes. The only point of us going was the rashes.... at the end she misdiagnosed him we had to go to another doctor to find out the reason why his fever kept coming back and with rashes all over his body. If I see a doctor who isn’t dressing professionally at WORK I wouldn’t spend my money on them. The worst of the worst was she prescribed some cream but when we went to the pharmacy they said that they didn’t receive anything so I called the doctor she told me that eclinical is only allow to send medication one time per day for each patient we would have to wait for the next day for her to send medication. I am in the medical field too. I never like my doctors knowing what profession I am in because I want to know the real them without any special treatments.

People should be able to have some fun in their jobs. People do better in a happier inborn environment. Plain boring areas like hospitals, schools, and prisons don’t have a good impact on how a person learns our get better. A more vibrant, fun, and welcoming place does. Why else do you think States with prisons don’t do much but that little island center and places like that where people who committed crimes are scent to have a lower criminal rate.

(not to mention that humans are part of the animal kingdom...) - remember biology: fauna and flora (not fauna, flora and humans) sadly humans in total are stupid as hell... and we are the only race that will manage to kill themselves and make their planet unable to live on... same with black lives matter... no no no... ALL LIVES MATTER... not only humans or part of humans... without keeping our environment at its best we will suffer... it started long ago and we know it (well some only think the only true value is money like a current president which I don't name here...)... and what do we do against it? nothing... just burn this world down and while we are at it create a lot of situations where we can look down on others to say "well they got it worse than we do"... without realizing we are all sitting in the same boat...

However i dont see it as completely professional to talk about social issues while on the clock. Not trying to silence those that do its just an opinion. But if you have a patient you feel comfortable talking with about social issues then by all means go ahead lol

While the music stopped and people called the ambulance, one guy, a nurse, even though he was a bit tipsy, rushed in to help and provided immediate aid, potentially saving the woman's life. I don't know what happened afterwards as I left to clear out the dance floor for medics, but I think in many instances the help from any medical professional, even the ones being "unprofessional" is the difference between life and death.

  • Okay, I know this isn't the point, but shouldn't you be reassured if you're doc has an attractive body? I mean, because it just means that they not only know what they're taking about, but they live it. It's kinda like having a coach for a sport that's heavy set and appears inactive, and that always kinda makes them feel less credible. But if they're active and have healthy bodies, they come off more credible. Wouldn't that kinda be the same thing? Like, doctors shouldn't be punished for being attractive and confident because there is some kind of stigma that attractive people aren't smart. (Which is interesting because there is also a stigma on the opposite side, where someone who you find unattractive is often perceived as unintelligent as well. It's almost like people just want a strictly average-looking doctor lol)

  • Doctors are people too, it's incredibly stupid to try and stifle their personal life and opinions just because it might be "unprofessional." Doctors should be able to do whatever they want on social media as long as it isn't a HIPPA violation. However, that said, I dont think being a doctor makes you more qualified to speak on things not related to heath and wellness. Gun violence isn't a health topic, and while Dr. Mike is entitled to have his opinions and use his platform here to express them, his opinions on that topic aren't more valid than a non-doctor.
